This guide walks you step by step through how to apply to become an Authorized Farmer for the Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) or a similar program in your state using the Healthy Together app. If you prefer reading instead of watching a training video, this article covers the same process.
Before You Begin
Before starting your application, make sure you have:
- Downloaded the Healthy Together App
- Created a Healthy Together account
If you need help creating an account, refer to the training titled “Create a Healthy Together Account.”
Step 1: Find the Authorized Farmer Program
- Open the Healthy Together App
- Search the list of available programs in your state
- Select Authorized Farmer
You’ll see information explaining what it means to be an authorized farmer in your specific state. Take a moment to review this information.
- Tap Apply to begin the application
Step 2: Connect Your Application to Your Account
To connect your application to your Healthy Together account, you’ll be asked how you want to connect.
You can choose:
- Email, or
- Phone number
Enter:
- Your email address or phone number
- Your last name
This step ensures your application is linked correctly to your account.
Step 3: Complete the Application
Each state has its own application process, so the questions may vary slightly. Be sure to follow the instructions for your state carefully.
Common application questions may include:
- First and last name
- Farm name
- Farm address
- Contact information
Other topics your state may ask about:
- Whether your farm address is different from your mailing address
- Accessibility of your farm or market stand
- Any conflicts of interest
Take your time as you fill out the application to make sure all information is accurate and complete.
Step 4: Review and Submit
- Review your completed application
- Sign where required
- Submit the application
Once submitted, your application is sent to the state agency that oversees the FMNP (or similar program) for review and approval.
Tap Done to return to the main screen.
You’ll now see Authorized Farmer labeled as CONNECTED.
Step 5: Check Your Application Status
- Tap on the Authorized Farmer program
- View the status of your application
You’ll also see any additional steps that must be completed before you’re ready to process transactions.
You’ll receive a notification when your application is approved and the next step—the Farmer Agreement—is available.
Step 6: Complete the Farmer Agreement
The Farmer Agreement outlines important responsibilities and expectations for the season. Read each section carefully.
You’ll review information about:
- Confirming farm details
- Farmer requirements
- State agency responsibilities
- Local agency responsibilities
- Conditions you agree to follow
- The USDA Non-Discrimination Statement
After reviewing all sections:
- Sign the agreement
- Submit it through the app
You’ll be notified once the state agency completes their portion of the agreement.
Step 7: Complete Required Annual Training
Once the agreement is finalized, the annual training will become available in the app.
These trainings review important topics such as:
- Which foods are eligible
- Proper treatment of customers
- Displaying FMNP posters
- Transaction requirements
- Cashier guidelines
- Understanding violations and sanctions
Complete all required trainings. Once finished, they are sent to the state for acceptance.
You’ll receive another notification when your training has been approved.
Step 8: Access the Farmer Dashboard
After your training is accepted, you’ll have access to the Farmer Dashboard, where you can manage your participation in the program.
